GHA’s Annual Strong Families Initiative
Griffin Housing Authority held its Strong Families Initiative Saturday, June 1, 2019 in the old baseball field located at Spalding County’s Fairmont Park. The initiative originated as HUD’s Father’s Day in 2011, although it is well known that it’s the mothers that do much of the heavy lifting as it relates to raising families.
In public housing communities where 75% of families are led by single women, that’s an enormous amount of responsibility, and one which should be given due consideration. HUD’s focus on Father’s Day was intended to bring awareness to the grim statistics children living in father-absent homes face. Fatherhood should not only be a topic with which we speak only with men. Fatherhood programs have more recently found that if they only work with men and never connect with their female partners, then there is less reason for the female partner to want to connect with the father.
Our new focus on both parents will aim to connect men and women to resources that will aid in improving these outcomes and unify the family. Involved fathers empower mothers, and by empowering mothers, families succeed.

GHA Hosts GSU’s Housing and Health Learning Academy
Griffin Housing Authority played host to Georgia State University’s Georgia Homes for Healthy Futures (HHF) Housing and Health Learning Academy Thursday, May 30, 2019 at UGA Griffin Stuckey Auditorium. HHF is a framework that supports sustainable systems and practices that intentionally focus on achieving environmental, individual and community aspirations, leading to thriving people and places now, and for generations to come. Session II: entitled “Stakeholders & Partnerships” focused on exploring the role of partner engagement in advancing the vision of HHF and was attended by over 6 additional Public Housing Authorities and/or Housing Agencies and Management companies throughout Central Georgia.
Selected recommendation for engaging residents and creating partnerships center around 3 components of housing;
Interiors: which reduce stressors and sleep disturbances, and enhance a sense of wellbeing
Exteriors: which maximize the use of semipublic space, fostering resident commitment by participating in programs that could produce job creation or provide community service opportunities.
Site-based advances: which designate gathering places for adults, improve pedestrian and bicycle circulation, cluster building groups, provide more areas for older children, and create small play areas in existing courtyards in view of other buildings. Additional recommendations of site-based advances could include gardening, increase and improve on existing trees and vegetation and the creation of suitable space for physical activity, exercise, and health education

The Park at The Oaks & The Little Free Library
We are excited to announce the opening of the Park at The Oaks. Located in the rear of The Oaks at Park Pointe and The Salvation Army, the park features a quarter mile walking trail and several senior fitness stations to help residents maintain healthy lifestyles.
In addition to the walking trail, the Park at the Oaks is also home to the twenty-eighth installation of the Little Free Library in Spalding County. The Little Free Library is a global book-sharing movement to help spread literacy through communities, one book at a time.
This installation is very special to us, as it was hand painted by a member of our community, Mr. Larry Tinsley. A graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Mr. Tinsley joined our community two years ago and has made a tremendous impact on the broader community through his beautiful artwork.
We would like to send a special thank you to all of the organizations and individuals who helped make this event a success.

We are excited to announce the grand opening of the Terraces at the Park! With the completion of our latest development, we have finalized the third phase of the Meriwether Homes redevelopment initiative, which began in 2015 with the opening of The Oaks at Park Pointe.
Overlooking the City of Griffin’s Municipal Golf Course and City Park, the Terraces are quite a sight to see. This 68-unit development is designed to give our future senior residents (62 and older) a wonderful quality living experience available. The Terraces feature a range of 1 and 2 bedroom units, a fitness and wellness center, community room, laundry room, outside walking trails and a community garden.
On behalf of our development and partners and community stakeholders, we are excited to continue our journey towards providing diverse housing solutions for the residents of Griffin and Spalding County.
For aspiring residents, stay tuned over the coming weeks for the announcement on how to apply for rental consideration at the Terraces at the Park.
Our Third Closing!
